Kappa Delta Rocks the Way to Preventing Child Abuse

Combine the taste of home-grilled food, the heartbeat of a concert, and the adrenaline of an Ultimate Frisbee tournament all at an affordable cost to participants and you have the rock n’ roll themed ShamROCK Week 2011 planned by the University of Tulsa’s chapter of Kappa Delta for the week of February 28 through March 5.

Each year, TU’s Beta Epsilon chapter of Kappa Delta Sorority hosts a Shamrock Week of events to raise money for Prevent Child Abuse America and the Parent Child Center of Tulsa. “One of the greatest things about our events is that while 20% of the money raised goes to a great national organization, 80% of everything we raise actually stays right here in Tulsa,” says Kylie Crawford, the Vice President of Community Service for Beta Epsilon chapter. “In fact, last year we were able to give over $3000 to the Parent Child Center of Tulsa, almost twice as much as we gave in 2009. We’re hoping to cross the $5000 mark this year.”

This ambition is evident in the variety of events the chapter is hosting this year. ShamROCK week kicks off on Monday with a $5 all-you-can-eat ShamROCK cookout at 5:00 pm in the Student Activities Center in TU’s Mayo Village. Freshly grilled burgers, hotdogs, seasoned chicken, and veggie burgers will be served, along with salad and home-made desserts.

“Last year we were told that our food was among the best of the philanthropy dinners for the year,” says Crawford. “We’re definitely planning a repeat.”

On Thursday, the chapter will host its second annual Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on Chapman Commons starting at 4:00 pm. Teams of seven to ten players will be divided into men’s and women’s brackets. The winner of each bracket will receive a grand prize basket, a Spa Essentials Package for the women and home-made steak dinners for the men. The $50 team registration fee and team signup sheet will be due by Wednesday, March 2 at 5:00 pm. “We hope that TU students and members of the community will get excited not only about the ShamROCK events but also about the fight against child abuse,” says Crawford. “We welcome students, teachers, and members of the Tulsa community to eat at our cookout, buy raffle tickets, and form Frisbee teams.”

For those interested in making a personal contribution, raffle tickets will be sold for $1 each from booths in the Allen Chapman Activity Center Monday through Thursday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Prizes include TU Apparel, J. Spencer jewelry, and gift cards to local restaurants and stores.

Shamrock t-shirts will also be sold at the various events for $20 with part of the proceeds going to Prevent Child Abuse America and the Parent Child Center. “Since we’re having a ‘rock n roll’ themed event, we wanted to make the shirts look like band t-shirts,” Vice President Public Relations Kyra McNamara says. “I got the idea for the design from the Guns ‘N Roses logo. Instead of guns I used daggers because they’re a Kappa Delta symbol.”

Individuals interested in forming Ultimate Frisbee teams or looking for more information can contact Crawford by phone at (515) 333-8861 or by email at kylie-crawford@utulsa.edu. Registration forms and information can also be picked up from the Kappa Delta house located at 3134 E. 5th Place on TU’s campus. One-hundred percent of all proceeds from ShamROCK events go to Prevent Child Abuse America and the Parent Child Center of Tulsa.
